Tulketh triumph and retain the Presidents Cup

Tulketh United celebrate winning the Presidents Cup

Ashton on Ribble (red) v Tulketh United - Presidents Cup Final 2017

Tulketh United became only the third team to retain the Presidents Cup when the beat Ashton on Ribble 2-1 in an exciting final at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium, Bamber Bridge.

It was a brisk and breezy evening when the players had to contend with the bright evening sunshine and from the outset it was evident that these were two evenly matched sides and it would take something special to break the deadlock. Tulketh’s captain Stephen Ireland marshalled his defence and he prevented Ashton taking the lead by clearing with an excellent diving header. Nathan Maddock nearly put Ashton ahead just before half time with a speculative effort which was competently dealt with by Joseph Cooper in the Tulketh goal.

Both teams had chances to open their accounts in the second half before Elliot Breakell opened the scoring for Tulketh United on 63 minutes with a decisive long range effort and nine minutes later it was 2-0 thanks to Ryan Kay before a goalmouth scramble gave Ashton on Ribble the benefit of a consolation goal scored by Charlie Young to make the final score 2-1.

The Trophy and souvenir medals were presented the teams and Man-of-the-Match Lee Bryans of Tulketh United by League President Dave Carlisle.
