Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs celebrate winning the Presidents Cup

Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs celebrated their first season in the League by beating fellow division 1 side Walton Athletic 10-1 in the Syndicate Trust Presidents Cup Final at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium, Bamber Bridge. The Southport outfit are reigning Lancashire Sunday Champions and have just taken over pole position in division 1.
The game was a mere 2 minutes old when Kevin Edgar’s low drive put Southport & AA ahead and Edgar repeated the feat five minutes later to give his side an early two goal cushion. In between these goals Southport’s Rob Lamont was rushed to hospital with a broken collarbone and we all wish Rob a speedy recovery.
Walton Athletic had their moments, they pressed hard to no avail and they were constantly let down with the final ball. Craig Taylor made it 3-0 on 27 minutes and Edgar completed his hat trick to make it 4-0 with a 20-yard piledriver on 40 minutes. Walton’s heads and hearts were lifted two minutes before half time when Daniel Schuyler pulled one back to send the teams in for the interval at 4-1.
Walton Athletics’ best period of the game came in the first 20 minutes of the second half when they had chances weren’t converted and how they needed that second goal. Their hopes were further dashed on 64 minutes when Daniel Boden made it 5-1, Kevin Edgar scored his fourth to make it 6-1 and further goals from Chris Bates (2), Chris Wincer and Joe Tierney completed the scoring.
The game was played in a fine spirit, well controlled by referee Mark Doherty and his Assistants Kavan Hurn, Josh Hodges and Tony Parr and a special mention to the Walton Athletic players and officials who showed the highest respect by waiting to applaud the Southport team as they received their medals.
The Presidents Cup was appropriately presented to the Southport captain David Spencer by League President Dave Carlisle who also presented the Man of the Match Award to Southport’s Kevin Edgar and the souvenir medals to both teams and the mascots Cody Parkinson (Walton Athletic) and Connor Edgar (Southport & AA).
