Southport & AA win to set up a title decider
Ribbleton (green) v Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs - Premier Division
Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs, fresh from winning the Challenge Cup on Wednesday met Ribbleton at UCLan Sports Arena and won 3-0 thanks to goals from Rob Lamont (2) and Matthew Coughlan. An entertaining first half finished level 0-0 at half time but the second half saw Gareth Jones lads do what they do best and that is grind out results by excellent teamwork and ruthless finishing.
This result means that Southport & AA move back to the top of the table with 41 points from 17 games and a goal difference of 43, Acregate Lane LC are in second spot with 40 points from 17 games and a goal difference of 19. These two will meet each other for their final game of the season on Sunday 12 May at Bankfield Lane, Churchtown, Southport
A win for Acregate would mean that they would win the title for the first time in their history, something that is long overdue. A win for Southport & AA or a draw would see them become League Champions in only their second season in the League and they would also complete an impressive league and cup double. This game will be a fitting finale to the most competitive premier division for years which has seen AFC Ingol, Ribbleton, Acregate and Southport & AA lead the table at various times with Hunters & Ingol Rangers inevitably lurking in the background.
Division 1 champions Earnshaw Bridge completed their season in style with a 4-1 win at home to Gregson Lane Wanderers. Top scorer Conor Davis bagged a hat trick with Mark Carlton adding the other. Alex Spence scored for Wanderers. Earnshaw Bridge, who completed their league season with 18 wins and 2 draws from 20 games, will be a welcome addition to our premier league.
Park United finished their debut season with the runners up spot in division 3 after 14 wins and a draw from 18 games and they will be playing their football in division 2 next season. Their scorers today were Adam Lamara, Jordan Millward, Danny Kidd, Alex Russell and Eddie Morton.
Cadley won 5-0 away at Poulton in youth division white and they will meet Winstanley Warriors on Sunday 5 May at Conway Drive in their final game. A win for Cadley will see them draw level with Garstang, who have completed their season with 43 points.
Youth division blue champions BAE Warton who have a 100% league record of 20 wins from 20 games beat Fulwood Amateurs Blues 3-0 with goals from Noah Fluss-Tramontano and Kevton Foster (2), Penwortham St Teresas won 4-1 away at Springfields and AC Preston who lost every one of their first 14 league games have now won the last four including today’s 9-2 win away at Layton Cavs.
