Southport celebrated winning the Syndicate Trust Youth Trophy for the third time following their 5-0 victory against Charnock Richard at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium, Bamber Bridge.
The well organised Southport team were ahead after 10 minutes when a cross from the left was well met by Ethan Dwyer whose header beat the Charnock keeper Harvey Collins. Charnock were unlucky to see Bradley Whittle’s effort well saved by the Southport keeper Callum Styles and three minutes later striker Niall Bernie watched his shot drift narrowly wide. More pressure from Charnock saw a well taken free kick cleared off the line.
The Charnock lads will have rued those missed chances on 39 minutes when Southport’s Connor Lally chip deceived the keeper to give them a 2-0 half time lead. Southport substitute Josh Nugent came on at half time and he wasted no time in getting on the score sheet after 48 minutes and he added his second and Southport’s fourth on the hour mark.
Charnock’s Declan Balbi received his marching orders from referee David Thomas for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity on 63 minutes but keeper Harvey Collins performed heroics in saving the penalty and two follow up efforts. A defensive mix up on 75 minutes allowed Ethan Dwyer to bag his second goal and complete a 5-0 win to Southport.
These two sides served up a fine display for the enthusiastic crowd and the game was well handled by referee David Thomas and his Assistants Luke Parker and Josh Baron.
The Syndicate Trust Youth Trophy was presented to Southport captain Steve McDonnell by Rob Hollowell on behalf of the sponsors D Hollowell & Sons (Blackpool) and Rob also presented the Man-of-the-Match award to Lewis King of Southport Fc and the souvenir medals to the players and officials.
