Mark Hughes - Referee of the Year 2017
Matt Shacklock - Young Referee of the Year 2017
The Lancashire Sunday Football League is pleased to announce that Mark Hughes is our Referee of the Year 2017 and Matt Shacklock is our Young Referee of the Year 2017.
Mark Hughes, who has been refereeing for over 30 years, started officiating in Blackpool and completed his refereeing apprenticeship in that area. He progressed to the West Lancashire League in 1991 and he has officiated at that level and above ever since.
He achieved Level 3 status in 2003 and continued at that level for 8 seasons when he officiated on many Conference Premier League fixtures (now the National League). His refereeing was recognised at the Lancashire Football Association AGM in 2016 when he received the Order of Merit Award for 30 years’ service to football.
Mark has been a loyal member of Preston Referees Society since he moved to Penwortham in 1997 and he has served on the committee of various local leagues, he is currently on the committee of the West Lancashire League. A lifelong Blackpool FC supporter, Mark lives and breathes football and refereeing and being part of the football fraternity.
He is grateful to his wife Mandy and daughters Becky & Courtney for their unstinting support over the years as well as to Jim Bryson who he has known since the early 90s as well as his refereeing comrades in the Blackpool, Fylde & Preston areas.
The League’s Young Referee of the Year 2017 is Matt Shacklock from Warton who has been refereeing for the past three seasons although this is his first season on the Lancashire Sunday League referees list. We have an excellent crop of promising, young officials who are members of Preston Referees Society and neighbouring RAs and we expect many of them to make substantial progress.
Matt decided to take up the whistle in 2014 when recurring injuries forced him to stop playing competitive football. A member of Preston Referees Society, Matt also officiates on the North West Counties and West Lancashire Leagues.
Matt’s performances throughout the season and his marks from club officials have been outstanding and have led to him receiving this Award. He is grateful to our Referees Manager David McNamara for his advice, support and encouragement and he is honoured to follow in the footsteps of those referees who have won this award and who have gone on achieve successful careers in refereeing.
