BAE Warton (red) v Padiham - LFA U18s Youth Cup Semi-final

It’s taken six weeks to get the BAE Warton v Padiham LFA U18s Youth Cup semi-final played after no less than five postponements, but the wait was worthwhile for BAE Warton who triumphed 4-1 on the 3G pitch at the County Ground Leyland.

With one of our youth teams Winstanley Warriors already through to the Final we were guaranteed the mouth-watering prospect of an all Lancashire Sunday League Final to reinforce the strength in depth of the clubs in our Youth Section.

BAE Warton (youth division white) and Padiham (youth division red) are two well organised and well-run clubs who both play fast, attractive football and they provided excellent fare for those who braved the cold to support them this morning.

From the kick off it was end to end stuff with two very evenly matched teams, both frantically trying to be first on the score sheet first and that honour fell to BAE Warton on 22 minutes when Matt Van Wyk was on hand to finish after a long range shot rebounded off the Padiham keeper. Resolute defending from Warton and the Herculean efforts of the Padiham keeper, ensured that the scoreline at half time remained 1-0.

It was fair to say that Warton came out after the restart, all guns blazing. A long range goal kick from Tom Spink cleared the midfield and landed well into the Padiham half, the difficult bounce drew the Padiham keeper, but the ball fell to the feet of Van Wyk who calmly lobbed the keeper to claim his and Warton’s second goal.

Not content to rest on their laurels, Cian Menzies deftly taken free kick put Warton 3-0 up on 60 minutes. Padiham battled on with plenty of effort but they were unable to break through the well-ordered Warton defence. The ever dangerous Matthew Van Wyk was on hand to put the game beyond the reach of the Padiham boys with an expertly struck long range volley, that curled into the top left of the Padiham net, to claim his hat trick.

But Padiham were to have the last word with a consolation goal on 85 minutes from Ben Quigley. Credit goes to both teams and their managers Mark Sevens (BAE Warton) and Mark Whitaker (Padiham) and their coaches for producing two well disciplined teams and also to the match officials, referee Dan Hooton and his Assistants Joe Hind and Josh Ridley for their efficient control of the game.

Ingol Rangers fell foul of in-form Ashton on Ribble going down 3-2 at the UCLan Sports Arena to the Ashton team who have won three and drawn two of their last five games. Steve Johnson, Scott Shannon and Dom Case scored for Ashton with Lee Ashcroft and Stu Parry replying. Leaders Hunters beat Theatre Boys 4-2, Acregate Lane beat Bamber Bridge Utd 3-2 and Tanterton ended a sequence of seven league games without a win by beating Ashton Villa 2-1.

Division 1 leaders Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs closed the gap on leaders Bolton Lads & Girls Club to five points after they won 7-0 at AFC Longridge, Walton Athletic made it 3 wins in a row by beating Whittle Wanderers 2-1 and there were wins for Tulketh United and Warton. Walton’s good form in division 2 continued with a 2-1 win at Penwortham Town, Gregson Lane Wanderers and Leyland Orient both won whilst Earnshaw Bridge and Fulwood Park Rangers drew 1-1. Division 3 leaders Sir Tom Finney had a comfortable home win against Leyland Athletic, second placed Fishwick Rangers were held 2-2 at Tarleton Corinthians, Waverley Park won at BAE Warton and Kingsfold and Lostock Hall played a double header with Kingsfold winning both games 2-1 and then 3-2.

Leyland BTR had an excellent 1-0 home in against Southport in the Syndicate Trust Youth Trophy where Penwortham St Teresas beat Penwortham Town 3-0 and Wyre Villa won 2-1 at Winstanley Warriors Reds.
